Let's all breathe a big sigh of relief. . .
I thought that this news would come by the US post, in the form of one of those big envelopes from the department, with the pretty laser-printed address label with the department letterhead on it. Moreover, although I had great hope, I certainly did not have any expectation that the news would be good. I suppose that is a form of faith, right?And yet the news is good---very good, in fact.
Total time to rewrite the chapter: one week.
Total time for my advisor to read it and comment: one week, less one day.
What follows is an excerpt from the email in question.

Subject: Re: Chapter draft
I have completed your chapter 2 and will mail it to you tomorrow. Here's what I say: "Much better! Move ahead." I have made a few comments and suggestions for you to think about. But don't dwell on these; get more material out.
